Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is the best overall index of kidney function. Normal GFR varies according to age, sex, and body size, and declines with age. The National Kidney Foundation recommends using the CKD-EPI Creatinine Equation (2009) to estimate GFR. The CKD-EPI equation was developed in 2009 to estimate GFR from serum creatinine, age, sex, and race.5The CKD-EPI equation is as accurate as the MDRD Study equation in the subgroup with estimated GFR less than 60 mL/min/1.73 m2and substantially more accurate in the subgroup with estimated GFR greater than 60 mL/min/1.73 m2. Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) calculated using either the MDRD Study equation or the CKD-EPI equation is an estimate of GFR, not the actual GFR. Both equations were derived from large population studies and will generate an estimate of the mean GFR in a population of patients with the same age, gender, race, and serum creatinine.
